Many people ask us how they can maintain their dog’s healthy and shiny coat. Well, if you think that some dogs can grow up to 100 feet of fur per day over their entire body, it can well seem like a full time job, but there are certain things you can do to help.
A Healthy Diet
As with humans, a dog’s diet is absolutely key to their health, and two things to look for in your dog’s food should be:
1) Protein. If your dog lacks this protein, which is a vital nutrient, its body will dedicate protein to muscle first, leaving less nutrients for its fur and skin – which can leave their coat dry and dull.
2) Omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. These essential elements keep your dog’s coat healthy, thick and lustrous. They can also help reduce itching, dandruff and allergy-related skin problems.
Exercise
Exercise is not only vital to keep your dog fit and slim – it can also help keep their fur in excellent condition. Regular exercise will benefit your dog’s overall health, and a healthy dog is more likely to have a healthy, shiny coat.
Dog Grooming
Whilst you can’t keep your dog from shedding, with a few key products and techniques, you can easily help to take good care of your dog’s coat at home to keep it looking its best.
1) Brushing. Give your dog’s coat at least one good brush every week with a de-shedding brush to get out the undercoat. Part the hair and brush from the skin out to avoid matting, moisture and heat build-up, which can cause yeast and bacteria. For an even slicker look, give your dog a quick brush every day.
2) Shampoos and conditioners. If your dog has sensitive skin, try a hypoallergenic or oatmeal shampoo. We’d recommend washing your dog every four weeks.
Medical Checkups
If you notice your dog has consistently itchy, uncomfortable skin or is shedding more than usual, your best bet is to take them to your vet. Whilst the problem may be very small, it’s better to ensure that it is given the correct preventative treatment.
